The Gambian electoral umpire said it has never happened in the Gambian electoral history for a president to concede to defeat before seeing the final result.
Jammeh had been behind Barrow in partial results released by the electoral body after collation in the last 24 hours.
Jammeh became president in a coup in 1994 in the tiny West African nation and has been in charge since then.
His office is yet to release a statement for the public since the results started coming in.
The Gambians have been celebrating the beginning of new era all over the place, the matured gesture done by the outgoing president can be likened to that of the former president of Nigeria; Goodluck Jonathan.
