World News- Turkey to Release 93,000 Convicts to Make Space for Coup Plotters
The Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish government, has reportedly issued a decree that will see the release of more than 38,000 prisoners.
The release is expected to accommodate the thousands arrested in connection with the recently failed military coup.
Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag, speaking in an interview with a Haber television, said 38,000 prisoners would be released initially, and that number could eventually grow to 93,000. Only prison inmates who were convicted before July the 1st are eligible to be part of the initiative, excluding those convicted of participating in the failed military coup.
The government has not given any reason for the effort, but it appears that the prisons are already in a training capacity.
As part of a nationwide purge involving the security services and other government agencies including the army, the police, the courts, schools, and universities, the Erdogan lead administration has either detained or suspended over 50,000 people following the insurrection. Various news agencies have reported that more than 35,000 people have been arrested in the crackdown.
Wednesday’s decree also ordered the immediate dismissal of over 2,360 police officers, 100 military personnel and about 196 staff with the BTK.
The people who have either been suspended from their jobs or detained have all been linked to U.S.-based Islamic Cleric Fethullah Gulen, an ally of Erdogan.
Erdogan has reportedly accused the 75-year-old, who is currently in a self-imposed exile in the U.S, of masterminding the failed military coup by rogue Turkish troops. Although Gulen has denied these accusations, Turkey has demanded an extradition from the U.S.
Turkey's Western allies have seriously become concerned that Erdogan, is using the crackdown as a means to target dissent, testing Turkey's relations as an important partner in the war against the Islamic terror. Fear engulfs the country as they await their fate.
